It's when your kidneys fail. You only need one by the way.

Hello Brandon - best not to jump to any conclusions about kidney failure yet. The kidneys do lie on either side of the spine and if your pain was in that area your doctor was correct to run tests for kidney problems. You might be experiencing the pain related to a kidney stone. Kidney stones, which are hard and very irritating to the tissues they are in contact with, will sometimes begin to migrate from the kidney through the ureters toward the bladder. As they "pass" they irritate the ureter's lining and can cause backup of urine toward the kidney. The good news is that these stones often pass without need for medical intervention. The pain from kidney stones can be excruciating. Hopefully if it is a stone you will not suffer too long. Good Luck

MY bad back was AGGRAVATED BY (not caused by) kidney problems. I had a bad back LONG before I had kidney problems.

My kidneys failed in 2008, and my back got WORSE, I got a kidney transplant in 2009. My back is BETTER but not "good". My own kidneys have literally dried up like prunes (atrophied)!

Still, I'd rather have the bad back than be DEAD from the failed kidneys!

Kidney failure is when your kidneys ... uhh ... fail.

You kidneys filter POISONS out of your blood. These poisons come from your natural digestion process. The food you eat is digested, and sometimes toxic chemicals are released. Your kidneys filter the poisons out and you release them in your urine. OH YEAH -- Kidneys ALSO take out excess water from your blood! [The Adrenal Glands are connected to the kidneys. The Adrenel Glands determine how much Red Blood Cells your body makes. If your kidneys fail the Adrenals usually fail, and you end up with anemia, too.]

If your kidneys FAIL, then these poisons do not get filtered out. As they build up in your system you feel worse and worse. When the kidneys FAIL, you have about 3 days to live, unless you get dialysis.

IF the doctor thinks that you are a good patient (you don't smoke, you don't drink, you don't use illegal drugs, and you don't have another serious disease like cancer) then you COULD be put on the Transplant Waiting List. UNTIL they find a new kidney to transplant, you will need Dialysis to keep you alive.

The NORMAL wait for a new kidney is about 30 months (two-and-one-half-years)

Sometimes back pain is caused by a kidney infection or some kind of kidney damage. I think you're jumping the gun a bit. You have had a bad back your entire life and very likely that's what's causing the pain now. Your doctor was just giving you all the possibilities, but probably should've kept that information to himself.

Your back pain could be a number of things. It could be muscle spasms, kidney infection, spine problems, disk problems, etc. I was in kidney failure and did not have back pain. Kidney failure is simply when the kidney stops functioning (filtering the blood of waste products and producing sufficient amounts of urine).

Kidney problems from diabetes? Avoid sugar and high carbohydrate meals.
